Histology Service Request Form

Introduction

Histology is the microscopic study of tissues and cells with its techniques producing visual images that are a real mix of art and science. The Histology Laboratory is a service facility in the Stem Cell Unit (SCU), Department of Anatomy, Located on Level 1 in the College of Medicine, King Saud University.

History

The Histology Laboratory has a long history of providing technical services which have been an essential part of the Department's obligation to quality in teaching and research. In the last two years major renovations took place resulting in a well-equipped, state of the art Histology Facility, compliant with standard requirements of safety.

Services*

  • Tissue processing and paraffin embedding.
  • Sectioning of paraffin blocks.
  • Cryostat sectioning of tissues.
  • Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining.
  • Special stains including Masson’s trichrome for collagen, Alcian Blue for sulfated mucosubstances, Verhoeff's-Van Gieson and Orcein-Giemsa for elastic fibers, Carbol chromotrope for eosinopils, oil red for fat, von Kossa and alizarin red for calcium and other stains as requested.
  • Immunohistochemistry, immunocytochemistry and immunofluorescence.
  • High quality digital photography and virtual microscopy.
  • Image analysis**.
  • Training in histological techniques.

*These histological services are available by prior arrangement only and subject to availability of resources.
**Our analysis services are only for research purposes and should not be used for clinical diagnosis.

Equipments

For paraffin-based histology, the laboratory is equipped with an automated tissue processing station, an embedding center, 2 rotary microtomes and a safety cabinet (for manual processing and staining); and for frozen sectioning, 1 cryostat. The laboratory is also equipped with different kinds of microscopes and is proud to have the world leading Aperio ScanScope for virtual microscopy and image analysis.

Policy and Procedure

  • A Work Request Form should be filled out.
  • Specimens for paraffin processing should be submitted to our Lab in 10% formalin (preferably buffered), or other fixative, in plastic containers that seal. It is a good idea to consult us before bringing the samples.
  • Each specimen will be given an accession number according to our coding system and will be registered electronically to follow its progression.

Staff

They work with the same team spirit that prevails in the Stem Cell Unit and Anatomy Department in general, and under the umbrella of a single goal of providing high-quality technical and research services.
